gear:inventory:inventory_of_accessible_music_equipment

This is rescued from Archive.org listing of 2024-11-30 Archive.org link

Notes:

  • Todo:
    • Add recent gear contributed by Brother OTG - manual process
    • Add links to videos I have posted made with various gear - can AI help me scan youtube and my bandcamp postings?
    • Mention any sound kits purchased for the gear, for example MPC expansions - again AI might be able to help me do this
    • Mine my download sound library and update the inventory.
  • 2026/04/25
    • I converted this from the saved webpage back to dokuwiki text using LibreThinker and Grok grok-4.20-0309-reasoning. It took only a few minutes to convert the page. In LibreOffice, this list is 16 pages long!
      • It would be fun to see how some of the local thinking models I have in LLM Studio would handle the task.
    • Some criticize running local models, they claim to have never found a need for it. The cost to use a frontier model like Grok is certainly very small. The API cost for grok to process this was maybe 50 cents or less, for a task that might have taken an hour to do by hand.

Why Have a Gear Inventory Publicly Accessible

When I was previously maintaining this list, prior to November 2024, all of this was an entirely manual process, and very laborious. Once I got it complete, I started trying to keep it up to date with new purchases. Whenever considering new gear I would try to use this list manually to avoid purchasing hardware gear that only duplicated software I already had. The project took quite a while.

I have found that now with the availability of AI, it is possible to query Grok about a new planned synth person and ask it “Based on the gear list at url-blah, will this new piece of gear add significantly to my sound inventory, or do I already have the sounds of this synth covered in my current collection. What new sound design capabilities will this synth add?

Going forward, I would like to add separate wiki pages for all the gear in this list. And include links on the pages to gear demos, tutorials, my own videos of music and demos of the gear, journal of what I have done with the gear, lists of which videos I have watched, which ones I want to watch, etc.

If you have any ideas how I could make this wiki helpful to you and your music creation, please let me know in the comments. Would you like help to maintain a list of your gear here? Let me know.

Gear I Have Access To

Gear comes in different varieties. Some of the gear I have access to are physical units, other gear is software.

I just found myself getting a great deal on a Korg M1R, even-though I already have a paid version of the Korg iM1 iPad software, which includes a virtual version of all the available upgrade cards. I have not yet purchased the upgrades that include the T1 cards. Does the M1R sound any different than the software? This is one of the many things to explore.

I also buy a lot of sound samples for some of my instruments. So this only expands the number of sounds that I have available to use. And I am always producing new sounds, further expanding the sounds present in my gallery.

Many of the software synths are emulations of physical synths. I am going to include the names of the synths that are being emulated, to help with considering acquisitions and whether they will add significant new sounds to my pallete.

If you need well sampled sounds for your Akai MPC from any of this gear, please let me know, I can help.

Cherry Audio (Mac & Windows)

Software Synths

Harmonia - Harmonia is a wildly innovative virtual instrument from Cherry Audio, designed to create the rich, evolving polyphonic tones often associated with vector and wave sequencer synthesizers of the 80s and 90s, but through a more effortless and visual technique.

https://store.cherryaudio.com/bundles/harmonia-synthesizer

Also have: Euphonic Sonics for Harmonia Preset Pack (sold separately), featuring 100 new presets showcasing the Harmonia's outstanding atmospheric tones, compelling sequences, dreamy pads, more basses, poly synths, keys, and leads, and more.

PS-3300 - PS-3300 is an exactingly faithful virtual analog emulation of the colossal and ultra-rare semi-modular analog polyphonic synthesizer released by KORG in 1977. Cherry Audio has pulled out all the stops to accurately recreate and update this mythical monster synth, from its massive stacked sonic character and signature multiple‑resonator sweeps to the considerable patching capabilities that distinguished the PS-3300 from all other polysynths of the era.

https://cherryaudio.com/products/ps-3300

Also have: Sound designer James Dyson's Resonation Preset Pack (sold separately) includes additional presets that go further into the relative dimensions between light and shadow and all the way to the outer limits.

GX-80 - GX-80 is Cherry Audio's visionary flagship synthesizer, over a year in the making. Combining the unparalleled sound and features of Yamaha's fabled GX-1 “Dream Machine” and its renowned descendant, the CS-80, GX-80 is a transformative virtual synthesizer blending the essence of two groundbreaking instruments to create a powerhouse hybrid. Featuring the carefully crafted and intensely circuit-modeled DSP designs of award-winning developer Mark Barton, Cherry Audio has replicated every subtlety of the classics to create the most authentic emulation of its kind.

Sines - Sines (regular price $39) is a sensational and innovative original polyphonic synthesizer. Employing four sine-wave oscillators, Sines utilizes diverse waveshaping methods to bend these pure waveforms into infinitely variable and complex shapes. When combined with its wide-ranging modulation capabilities and effects, users can create a distinctive array of unique timbres ranging from the sublime to sizzling.

Elka-X - A Computer Music 10/10! Elka-X synthesizer (regular price $39) is based upon the legendary Synthex, a rare Italian analog synthesizer designed by Mario Maggi and manufactured by ELKA in the early eighties. Elka-X replicates the extraordinary character of the original synth without compromising sound or functionality, thoughtfully expanding its feature set and delivering the authentic Synthex experience at a price anyone can afford.

Lowdown - (emulates the Moog Taurus) Lowdown Bass Synthesizer (regular price $25) recreates the super-fat, room-rattling sounds of the most legendary dual-oscillator bass pedal synth ever made. Heard on countless prog-rock and new wave tracks in the 70s and 80s, this floor pedal monster comes to the desktop for the very first time. From the dual “constant-beat” oscillators to the girthy ladder filter, DSP wizard Mark Barton (MRB) has modeled every aspect of the original with exceptional accuracy.

Miniverse - Miniverse (regular price $39) is our painstaking virtual emulation of the granddaddy of all portable synthesizers. When we set out to create Miniverse, we focused on a single principle: absolute authenticity. We avoided the temptation to add extra features, such as additional LFOs or effects, which might distract from the spirit and vibe of the classic original. Instead, Miniverse portrays the pure, raw, powerful sound and feel of the classic original. Whether you're seeking monstrous leads, funky basslines, or warm atmospheric pads, Miniverse has you covered.

Dreamsynth - Dreamsynth (regular price $39) is an original tribute to the celebrated hybrid analog/digital synthesizers of the mid-to-late 1980s. The innovative design blends flexible dual-wave morphing oscillators, stereo filters, a fully polyphonic string synthesizer, extensive and easy-to-use modulation, studio-quality effects, and MPE support, all in an elegant vintage-style synth interface. Inspiration from renowned synths including the Ensoniq ESQ-1, the Kawai “K” series, and the Sequential Prophet VS.

Quadra - Quadra (regular price $39) is a super-accurate emulation of the ARP Quadra synthesizer, reproduced for the first time. We’ve addressed the original Quadra’s shortcomings and wildly expanded it for an experience that blows away the real thing in every way. Each of its four sections is independently assignable to any keyboard region for endless splitting and layering flexibility. The overall sound quality has been improved for a richer and fatter tone. And not only did we make a killer emulation of the aforementioned onboard phaser effect, we added a stereo chorus/flanger, a syncable echo, and studio-quality reverb - all individually routable for unprecedented effects flexibility.

Memorymode - Memorymode (regular price $39) is based upon the Memorymoog, one of the best sounding polyphonic analog synthesizers of the 80s, and was expertly modeled upon a vintage instrument originally owned by jazz legend Chick Corea. It expands upon the original without compromising any of the sound or functionality that made it great, and does away with its reliability and tuning issues. The user interface has been streamlined with fast, simple-to-use pop-up menus and an improved value display window.

PS-20 - PS-20 (regular price $29) is an ultra-realistic, polyphonic, hot-rodded tribute to Korg's renowned MS-20. First and foremost, PS-20's dual highpass/lowpass filters super accurately recreate the MS-20's famous raunchy sound in all of its squelchy, screaming glory. Every part of the instrument has been “souped up” with killer features, including 16-note polyphony, a unique three-layer, eight-step sequencer with flexible CV outs, integrated effects, and a simplified and improved patch panel section for modular-synth flexibility.

Eight Voice - Eight Voice (regular price $29) meticulously emulates the immense sound of the Oberheim Eight Voice, one of the world’s rarest and most desirable vintage instruments. Predating modern microprocessor control, its eight independent dual-oscillator voice modules could be challenging to program. Eight Voice’s unique Voice Link controls allow simple and powerful grouping of voice module controls, eliminating individually setting each module's controls. Focus buttons allow instant enlargement of any section of the user interface and massively flexible keyboard assign modes enable endless mono and poly keyboard zoning and layering options.

Polymode - Polymode (regular price $29) is inspired by the groundbreaking Moog Polymoog synthesizer. One of the world’s first polyphonic synthesizers, its unique multiple parallel filter implementation and mod routings give it a sound like no other synth. With a streamlined user interface and immense modulation capabilities, Polymode sets a new standard for animated, sonically evolving string, pad, and choral tones.

CA2600 - CA2600 (regular price $25) is a powerful, self-contained duophonic synthesizer inspired by the groundbreaking ARP 2600 synthesizer. With its huge sound, unique user interface, and thoughtful bonus features, CA2600 delivers the original 2600 experience like no other virtual instrument.

DCO-106 - DCO-106 (regular price $25) is a stunning recreation of the much-loved Juno poly synths of the 80's that's both easy to understand and powerful to explore, creating a massive array of sonic landscapes, cutting lead sounds, warm and hazy pads, punchy synthetic electro drums, and far more.

Comparison with real Roland Juno 106

Surrealistic MG-1 Plus - Surrealistic MG-1 Plus Synthesizer is a super authentic recreation of the fun and funky Moog MG-1 synthesizer sold in Radio Shack stores in 80s. Surrealistic MG-1 Plus delivers fat analog tone in spades along with a unique polyphonic oscillator section, “bell tone” ring modulation, and a number of improvements that tremendously expand its capabilities.

Mercury-4 - Mercury-4 (regular price $39) emulates one of the best and quirkiest polyphonic synths of the late 1970's, the Roland Jupiter-4. The rarest and most sonically unique of the fabled Jupiter series, we’ve gone to great lengths to recreate every nuance of this beloved classic. Expertly modeled upon a vintage Jupiter-4 originally owned by Greg Hawkes of legendary 80’s new wave rockers The Cars, Mercury-4 improves upon the original with 16-voice polyphony, infinite patch storage, velocity sensitivity, MPE support, and more. We’ve even paired it with a fantastic model of the classic Roland Space Echo tape delay!

Voltage Modular

Voltage Modular Core + Electro Drums (regular price $99) is a powerhouse collection of modular madness including 120 modules and over 600 presets. All of the fundamental tools of modular synthesis are included - a huge variety of oscillators, filters, envelope generators, amplifiers, arpeggiators, sequencers, mixers - plus powerful effects, samplers, a large suite of polyphonic modules, the room-rattling vintage oscillator and filter, our drum sequencer, and a huge collection of electronic drum and percussion modules.

Voltage Modular Designer

Voltage Modular Modules

  • Miniverse set - The Miniverse Module Collection expands Cherry Audio’s smash-hit Miniverse instrument into 14 flexible modules for use with the Voltage Modular virtual instrument platform. It retains all the classic tone and mojo that made the original Mini great while freeing users of the fixed “hard-wired” limitations of the original. Poly module versions of the oscillator, mixer, filter, glide, contour, and VCA sections are included for up to 16-note polyphony, and we’ve even exactingly modeled the unique A-440 reference oscillator!
  • Polymode Module - https://store.cherryaudio.com/bundles/polymode-module - Polymode Module is a complete instrument inspired by the legendary 70s Polymoog synthesizer. One of the world's first polyphonic synthesizers, it excels at large pads, strings, and vocal-esque sounds, and its unique multiple filter implementation and mod routings gives it a sound like no other synth.
  • FM Bundle - FM Bundle includes mono and poly versions of FM Station, a powerful four-operator FM oscillator that precisely recreates the punchy, crystalline tones of classic DX-series FM synths of the 80s, with a graphic interface that makes FM programming incredibly easy. Also included are mono and poly editions of EG Station, graphic envelope generator module featuring eight fully independent envelope generators with velocity CV inputs, and super fast and easy normalled connections.
  • Model VM900 set - the legendary Moog 900-series modules with spine-tingling impact and accuracy. Every detail has been expertly reproduced, for a virtual window into the halcyon days of early analog synthesis - Mark Barton’s (MRB) proprietary DSP coding reproduces each and every sonic nuance with unprecedented accuracy. The 26-module VM900-series collection has not been altered or updated to reflect modern trends - panel layouts and operation have been preserved in order to present a one-to-one early analog experience like no other. From oscillator drift to warm mixer overdrive to painstakingly reproduced panel art, it’s all there - the Cherry Audio/MRB VM900 Collection is simply a “must-have” module set for all purveyors of vintage analog synthesis!
